SLU Men's Rugby Helping Kids With Cancer
February 21, 2010

The young men of SLU Rugby have coordinated with St. Baldricks Foundation to host a fundraising event.
Laclede Street Bar and Grill
3818 Laclede Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63108
Sunday, February 21, 2010
Starting at 12:30.

What is St. Baldrick’s Foundation?

Although you can find out more by visiting www.stbaldricks.org, it is a charitable foundation with the goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer.  The organization funds more childhood cancer research grants than any other organization outside of the United States Government, and has funded nearly $42 million dollars in research in the past four years.

How do they do it?

Each St. Baldrick’s event calls on participants to shave their heads in unity with children with cancer.  Many of the young children undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment will lose their hair as part of the treatment.  Participants agree to shave their heads at the event in support of the many challenges these young children endure.

What can you do?

A.       Make a donation.  Maybe for reasons outside of personal vanity you don’t feel like shaving your head.  If that is the case you can go to http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/eventid/4067/eventyear/2010 and click on “Make a Donation.”  This will permit you to make a donation online (Please use Event ID# 4067) or you can click on the following link which will download a pdf donation form that you can either mail or bring to the event that day:  https://www.stbaldricks.org/media/site_media/donation_forms/donationform2010.pdf

B.      Become a shavee.  We would love nothing more than to see entire squads shave their heads as a team in support of this cause.  SLU Rugby has done this in years past and the team as whole seems to enjoy the unity it creates.  Hopefully your leadership will motivate your respective squads to join in.  From the following link you can register to become a shavee:  http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/eventid/4067/eventyear/2010 once on the page click on the “Participate at this Event” link on green on the right side of the page and follow the prompts.  You can even add a before and after picture to send to your email lists to seek donations.

NOTE:  You can register a “Team” and have shavees join your team, or you can register as an individual.  We would love to see individual teams from the MRFU register their squads for this event.

C.      Sponsor the event.  We realize every non-profit organization is in need of money in our current economic times, and we are cognizant most businesses have cut back their charitable giving.  Therefore we are looking for minimal donations to be considered an event sponsor.  We have set donation levels at $250, $500, and $1000 for corporate sponsors.  If you have a business you think might be interested in participating, please forward this information along or have them contact me or my event coordinators directly.

D.      Show up.  If for some reason you can’t shave your head, and you don’t have any funds to give, we would still love to have you there.  This event is a family friendly event so all the high school programs on the list are more than welcome to come and enjoy this event.

Who does the shaving?

All of the shaving is done by licensed beauticians and barbers.  Anybody who is cutting their hair for “Locks of Love” can also participate and have their donated to Locks of Love as well.

We hope you share this information on to your respective teams, men’s, women’s, collegiate, and high school.  This is an easy way for a team to be involved in helping a great cause and to show our local community what rugby players can do collectively off of the field.
